When I was living in New York growing up I made a close friend who married a Deaf man. I learned ASL to communicate with him. Deaf culture has been very important to me and I have sought to be an ally to the Deaf. When I met Brooklyn – who ALSO lived in Brooklyn and was Deaf I was so moved by her. She and I would sign together in class and she was such a great friend. She was such a great “Listener” and cared SO much about what was going on in my life. She and I would talk about boys and she told me she never thought she would marry a deaf man, but she met Brad who was perfect for her in every way (and was also Hearing impaired). He also knew my friend’s husband who was deaf! While shooting their engagements we laughed, danced and signed about how much they love each other. We decided to celebrate the fact that they are deaf in their engagements because I think it is something so beautiful about them and their relationship. It’s something unique about them that they understand in a way the hearing world can’t. Both Brooklyn and Brad wear some sort of hearing aide/implant to be able to communicate with hearing world, but in a beautiful way they can communicate only with each other and I’m so grateful I got to be a part of telling their story. Here’s some love with Brooklyn and Brad.
